COUNSELOR’S CORNER- August 2017

Welcome back to all Meadows Parkway children, families and staff-

We are off to a great start here in the Meadows. Many children are enjoying their school experience and are adjusting well to the start of the school year.   There are also times when some children need a little extra assistance to adjust to the big change of starting preschool.     Here are some tips to help your child adjust to school.

  1. Facilitate your child’s bonding with the teacher- children need to attach to their teacher to be ready to learn.Talk about your child’s teacher in a positive manner, draw pictures for the teacher etc. and let the teacher know if your child is still feeling anxious about coming to school.
  2. Acknowledge and validate the strong emotions of separation and calm feelings of anxiety by reassuring and predicting what your child will and has experienced.
  3. Give your child a way to feel connected to you during the day such as a picture of you, a comfort item and develop a ritual to say goodbye every day.
  4. Create a structured routine that involves bedtime and calm mornings.Preschool age children often have to go to bed earlier than children who don’t go to school.

Learning to separate is an ongoing process and with supports/time will lead to a healthy, happy and confident preschooler.

For more tips and resource suggestions see the handout in the counselor’s corner folder on the wall in the front hallway at Meadows or feel free to call.
